Weird A-Z. M is for Monsieur Mangetout
Weird A-Z. M is for Monsieur Mangetout
Michel Lotito (1950-2007) was a French performer, famous for being able to eat indigestibles. His stagename was Monsieur Mangetout. On stage he would eat metal, rubber and glass, taking items from bicycles, televisions, shopping trolleys and once even a Cessna 150 light aircraft. Items were cut up and swallowed, with the aircraft being gradually consumed between 1978 and 1980.
He began eating such materials aged nine, and gave his first public performance aged 16.
He apparently suffered no ill effects even when he had consumed items considered to be poisonous. When performing, Lotito usually ate more than 2 pounds (1 kg) of material daily, drinking considerable quantities of water with his meal. Interestingly, he claimed that eating hard-boiled eggs or bananas would make him sick.
Between 1959 and 2007 it is thought that he ate about a ton of metal. He died of natural causes at a relatively young age.
